The common phrase is that Clothing Makes the Man, but let’s face it folks. It’s 2020 and it’s not a mans world anymore. Women are out in the world just as much as men and with our gender fluid times, its impossible to make anything about 1 sex anymore. So, we will say that Clothing Makes the Photo. Because truthfully, it doesn’t matter who’s in the pictures, the guidelines are the same.
Our Tip for this week is that the clothing of the people in your portraits should be complimentary and coordinated, but not matchy-matchy. Remember the good old days of matching sweaters, shirts or pants? Those days are behind us ladies and gentlemen and it’s not a bad thing. We encourage people who are planning a portrait session, whether it’s for family, an engagement or just for fun, to put some thought into what you are going to wear.
So what do we mean by complimentary? Basically, you should all wear colors that go together or are in the same color family. For example, if you want to wear a blue shirt, then everyone should have on a blue shirt, but it can be in different shades, tones or styles. Maybe you love the color purple, but your significant other hates purple. Ok then, wear purple and let them wear a color that goes with purple, like gray or black.
The bottom line when dressing for a portrait session is to make sure that as a group, you look good together. If there are only 2 of you, thats ok. Just make sure you look great when standing next to each other. If you clash in the mirror, you will clash in your portraits.
